Beginner Double Brim Knit Hat Pattern (Beginner-Friendly, Unisex, 3 Sizes)

If you’re looking for a beginner double brim knit hat pattern that’s warm, practical, and easy to follow, this design is a perfect place to start.

This unisex knit hat pattern is worked using worsted weight yarn and includes three sizes, making it ideal for gifts, family sets, or market prep. The double brim adds structure and extra warmth around the ears, while the simple construction keeps it approachable for newer knitters.

Whether you’re knitting your very first hat or just want a reliable go-to beanie, this pattern keeps things straightforward and wearable.

Why This Beginner Double Brim Knit Hat Is Perfect for New Knitters

A lot of double brim hats look complicated — but they don’t have to be.

This pattern uses basic stitches and simple shaping to create a polished, cozy finish without advanced techniques. If you’re comfortable knitting in the round and working basic decreases, you can absolutely make this hat.

You’ll love this pattern if you want:

What Makes a Double Brim Knit Hat Different?

A double brim knit hat features a folded ribbed edge, creating two layers of fabric around the forehead and ears. This design:

  • Adds extra insulation in cold weather
  • Helps the hat hold its shape
  • Creates a structured, professional look
  • Feels soft and secure without being bulky

The fold also makes it easy to adjust the fit slightly depending on personal preference.

Yarn Recommendation

This beginner double brim knit hat pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn #4, which makes it:

  • Easy to find in most yarn stores
  • Beginner-friendly to work with
  • Warm without feeling heavy
  • Perfect for everyday winter wear

Wool or wool-blend yarns will give you the best structure and elasticity, but acrylic blends work great for easy-care gifts.

I personally chose this Wool of the Andes Tweed. It’s the perfect yarn for this hat, but feel free to use whatever yarn you prefer. As always, make sure you’re using the same weight the pattern calls for and check your gauge before beginning.

Sizes Included

This pattern includes three unisex sizes, making it easy to knit for:

  • Teens
  • Women
  • Men

The ribbed brim allows for comfortable stretch and a secure fit across a range of head sizes.

Skill Level

Beginner

This knit hat pattern for beginners assumes you are comfortable with:

  • Casting on
  • Knit stitch
  • Working in the round
  • Basic crown decreases

No complicated techniques required.

A Great First Hat Pattern
