If you’re looking for a beautiful yet easy knitting lace stitch, the Herringbone Lace Rib Stitch Pattern is a great one to add to your stitch library. This elegant stitch creates an open, textured fabric with a lovely herringbone-inspired look.

One of my favorite things about this knitting stitch is that it looks beautiful on both sides, making it especially useful for projects where both the front and back of the fabric will be visible.
Even better, it’s only a 2-row repeat, so once you get the hang of the pattern, it’s easy to memorize and relaxing to knit.

About the Herringbone Lace Rib Stitch
The Herringbone Lace Rib Stitch combines a ribbed texture with delicate lace openings. The result is a lightweight and stretchy fabric with plenty of texture and drape.
This stitch pattern works beautifully for many different knitting projects, including shawls, scarves, sweaters, cardigans, wraps, and more. You can also experiment with different yarn weights to create completely different looks.

Easy Lace Knitting Stitch: Herringbone Lace Rib
Stitch Pattern Details
- Skill Level: Easy
- Cast On: Multiples of 7 + 1 stitches
- Pattern Repeat: 2 rows
- Style: Lace / Rib Stitch
- Reversible: Looks great on both sides
How to Get Started
To begin, cast on a multiple of 7 stitches, then add 1 additional stitch.
For example, you could cast on:
15 stitches = (7 × 2) + 1
22 stitches = (7 × 3) + 1
29 stitches = (7 × 4) + 1
36 stitches = (7 × 5) + 1
Choose the number of repeats depending on how wide you would like your project to be.
Once you have your stitches cast on, simply work the 2-row Herringbone Lace Rib Stitch repeat until your project reaches your desired length.
What Can You Make With This Stitch?
Because of its beautiful openwork texture and reversible appearance, this lace knitting stitch is very versatile. Try using it to make a lightweight knit scarf or shawl, or incorporate it into a sweater or cardigan for an eye-catching lace detail.
It would also look beautiful as a summer knit using cotton, bamboo, linen, or another lightweight yarn. For a cozy cold-weather project, try it with wool or a soft wool-blend yarn.

Tips for Knitting This Lace Stitch
When working lace stitches, try to keep your tension relaxed and consistent. Avoid pulling your yarn overs too tightly, as they create the beautiful openings in the fabric.
Blocking your finished project can also make a big difference. It helps open up the lace pattern, even out your stitches, and show off the Herringbone Lace Rib design.
If you’re new to lace knitting, don’t let the beautiful texture intimidate you. With only a 2-row repeat, this is a simple lace stitch pattern that you can quickly become comfortable with.
