How to Yarn Over Slip Stitch

Hello my crochet people, happy to be back to teach you some crochet stitch basics. Today, we’re going to look at the yarn over slip stitch.

Also know as a half double crochet slip stitch, the YO slip stitch is very basic and beginner friendly.

It’s a great stitch for headbands, boot cuffs, edges, coasters, hat brims, waistbands, bags etc. You can take a guess at some of the future projects we’re gonna be making 😉

I love the yarn over slip stitch for winter projects because it’s works up really thick. I you’re familiar with this stitch and have some suggestions for future projects with it, leave them in the comments.

I’m using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick #6 Super Bulky because it suits the winter style of this stitch, as well as a 10mm crochet hook. You can use any yarn or hook size you prefer for this stitch tutorial, whatever you have is good. Just have fun!

For the YOST you can start with any number of ch. For today demonstrate I’m going to ch 10

Row 1 : ch 10, 1 YOST into second ch from hook and each ch across. Total of 9 YOST ( Check picture 1 and 2 below )

Row 2 : Turn, ch 1 ( do not count as a st ), 1 YOST into first st and each st across. Total of 9 YOST ( Check picture 3 and 4 below )

Repeat row 2 for as many rows as you wish. I made a total of 10 rows.
