Finally! A Men’s Hat Crochet Pattern

I know, you never expected to hear that, but I finally did it! I made a hat pattern to fit men’s head sizes. With this men’s hat crochet pattern, you can easily make a gift for any of the men in your life.

It’s perfect for crochet gifts any time of year, but especially for the winter holiday season. Also, it’s a 1 skein project, so that means it’s time to do some serious scrap yarn stash busting.

This men’s hat crochet pattern was made using a #6 super bulky yarn, so it works up super fast. That means you can make several before the holidays, or anytime of year. It’s a great project if you live in a cold climate and want to donate some hats for people to keep warm.

I used Lion Brand wool ease thick and quick, which is readily available in the US. If you don’t have access to that yarn specifically, don’t worry, you can use any #6 super bulky yarn.

This men’s hat crochet pattern was designed to be easy/intermediate skill level, but I only say intermediate because I used a technique called a short row.

It’s a technique typically seen in knitting, but if you’re not familiar, don’t worry: I have a follow along video tutorial as well so everyone should have no problem’s with it. Otherwise, it’s all just basic slip stitching.

The sizing for this men’s hat crochet pattern is very forgiving as it’s stretches quite a bit, so this one should fit most heads.

If you’re looking for more crochet gifts projects to work on, I highly recommend these crochet patterns below

Notes and pattern description:

For this crochet hat we’re going to use a slip stitch into the front loop only to create a wonderful stretch and stitch texture, looks like a Purl or Garter stitch in knitting. The slip stitch can be a little tight, so be sure to crochet more loosely. We’re going to use a short rows technique to increase and decrease at the hat crown, creating a perfect shape for this style of hat.

This hat is worked in the row with the rows lengthwise and then sewn together at the end, which means the rows count will be the circumference and the stitches count will be the length.

Yarn needed: 90 yards

Gauge: 10 st X 14 rows = 4″

Finished hat measurements: 21.66 Circumference stretches out to 26-27″ X 9.20″ Tall

Sewing Up The Hat

I’m going sew on the right side and use the mattress stitch to sew the hat together but you can use any method you prefer.

Step 1: Insert needle into the top loop of the first st and pull through, insert needle into the top loop of next st and pull through. Picture 2 and 3 below

Step 2: Insert needle into the top loop of the first st on the opposite side and pull through, insert needle into the top loop of next st and pull through. Picture 4 and 5 below

Step 3: Insert needle into the same st that you pulled the yarn through last time on the opposite side and pull through, insert needle into the top loop of next st and pull through. Picture 6 and 7 below

Step 4: Insert needle into the same st that you pull the yarn through last time on the opposite side and pull through, insert needle into the top loop of next st and pull through. Picture 8 and 9 below

REP step 3 and step 4 until you reach the top part of the hat

Closing up the top of the hat

With the remaining tail on the needle. Thread the needle through the spaces on the top of the hat around. Pull tight and bring your tail through to the inside of the hat. Make as many knots as you need till the hat feels secure. Weave the end and you’re done! Check picture below

I’m sewing KnitcroAddict’s logo on the hat to make it special for Mr. KnitcroAddict 🙂
