Lacy Crochet Sweater Top

A beginner friendly crochet sweater top project

I promised everyone more drunken granny stitch projects after my last stitch tutorial, and this weeks Lacy Crochet Sweater Top delivers.

I have been swamped lately and this crochet sweater top had to be put to the side for bit. That’s certainly a good thing, as pursuing crochet as a passion and a vocation is my dream, but I sometimes bite off more than I can probably chew and then get to chewing. Back to the sweater top.

It’s a very simple, beginner friendly two panel project. When it’s finished and looking really cute, no one will believe how easy it was.

I used Ice Yarns Summer Time in an olive color for this one. It’s a 79% cotton and 21% Viscose blend, and it’s beautiful and smooth. Great for summer. As always, you can substitute the yarn for this pattern, just make sure to check the gauge first.

• Drunken granny stitch = ( 3 dc, ch 2, 1 dc, All into same st )

Yarn needed : 720( 780, 860, 920, 1,000, 1,060 ) Yards

Gauge blocked : 3 Drunken granny st X 6 rows = 4″

Panels ( Make 2 )

Row 1 ( RS ) : ch 74( 84, 94, 104, 114, 124 ), sk 5 ch ( count as 1 dc and ch 2 sp ), 1 Drunken granny st into next ch, *sk 4 ch, 1 Drunken granny st into next ch* REP from *TO* until you have 3 ch left, sk 2 ch, 1 dc into last ch. Total of 14( 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 ) Drunken granny st

Row 2 ( WS ) : Turn, ch 3 ( count as 1 dc ), 1 Drunken granny st into each ch 2 sp across, end with 1 dc into the fifth ch that we sk on row 1. Total of 14( 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 ) Drunken granny st

Row 3 : Turn, ch 3 ( count as 1 dc ), 1 Drunken granny st into each ch 2 sp across, end with 1 dc into the third ch. Total of 14( 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 ) Drunken granny st

Row 4 – Row 12( 12, 14, 12, 14, 14 ) REP Row 3

If you want a shorter top, just make less rows. If you want a longer top, just keep repeating row 3 more times before making the sleeves.

Set up row for the sleeves

After you reach the end of row 12( 12, 14, 12, 14, 14 ), make 44 ch for all the sizes and then cut the yarn. Add a new yarn into the last st on the other side and make 44 ch for all the sizes and then cut the yarn. ( Check picture below )

*If you want shorter or longer sleeves, just make less or add more ch in multiples of 5+4 ch ( Make sure both are even )

Row 13( 13, 15, 13, 15, 15 ) : Turn the RS facing up, add a new yarn into first ch then, ch 3 ( count as 1 dc ), sk 2 ch, 1 Drunken granny st into next ch, *sk 4 ch, 1 Drunken granny st into next ch* REP from *TO* until you reach the body part then make, 1 Drunken granny st in to each ch 2 sp across the body part then make, 1 Drunken granny st into first ch on the sleeve, *sk 4 ch, 1 Drunken granny st into next ch* REP from *TO* until you have 3 ch left, sk 2 ch, 1 dc into last ch. Total of 32( 34, 36, 38, 40, 42 ) Drunken granny st ( Check picture below )

Row 14( 14, 16, 14, 16, 16 ) : Turn, ch 3 ( count as 1 dc ), 1 Drunken granny st into each ch 2 sp across, end with 1 dc into the third ch. Total of 32( 34, 36, 38, 40, 42 ) Drunken granny st

Row 15( 15, 17, 15, 17, 17 ) – Row 24( 24, 26, 26, 28, 28 ) REP Row 14( 14, 16, 14, 16, 16 )

Cut the yarn leave 40 – 60″ long tail

Sew the front and back panels together

Sew the shoulders and tops of the sleeves together

Place your panels right side facing down. We’ll sew on the wrong side, using the tails that we left earlier. Sew 61( 66, 71, 76, 76, 81 ) dc of the front and back panel together at the shoulder seam and the top of the sleeve. Use which ever method you prefer to sew. ( Check picture below )

Sew the side seams and the bottom sleeves together

Fold your top in half at the shoulder seam right side facing each other, we’ll sew on the wrong side. Cut a new strand of yarn 60 -70 inches long, enough to sew the side and the sleeve. Start sewing from the bottom up to the side seam until you reach the armpit and continue sewing the sleeve side seam until you reach the end of the sleeve, cut the yarn and weave the end.
