Crochet Clutch Purse (Beginner friendly free pattern and video tutorial)

If you’ve seen some of my purse and handbag designs but felt they were a little too intimidating, I have something just for you. Here’s an easy, beginner friendly crochet clutch purse project that doesn’t require a lot of hardware or sewing.

It’s a really casual clutch/shoulder bag that’s comfortable to wear, durable and simple to make. I love making my own bags because you can make them specifically to match the season, outfit or occasion.

If you’d like to purchase the ad free printable PDF with step by step photo instructions and a video tutorial for this crochet clutch purse, visit me on Etsy here.

Materials

Stitches used & code

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • rep = repeat
  • sk = skip
  • pm = place marker
  • rs = right side
  • ws = wrong side

Gauge unblocked : 5 sc x 5 rows = 2″

Measurement : 10.5″ wide x 6.5″ tall

If you want to add a lining for your crochet purse, here’s the video tutorial for the method I like to use👇🏻 If you liked the backpack shown in the lining video, here’s the video tutorial for that as well.

Pattern

Row 1 ( ws ) color A : ch 25, 1 sc into second ch from hook and each ch st across. Total of 24 st

Row 2 ( rs ) color A : Turn, ch 1 ( do not count as a st ), 1 sc into each st across. Total of 24 st

Row 3 – 30 rep row 2 ( color A )

*After you have 30 rows, we’ll make sc around the edge (pm into first st). Total of 108 st around the edge

Join the bag

Fold your purse in half with the wrong sides facing each other. I used flat slip stitch join with the color B. I join 30 stitches together, so I should have 15 flat slip stitch join. Check picture below for the flat slip stitch join

Purse flap

Row 1 ( rs ) color B : Add new yarn into the first st on the right corner, 1 sc into each st across. Total of 24 st

Row 2 ( ws ) color B : Turn, ch 1 ( do not count as a st ), sk first st, 1 sc into each st till you have 2 st left, sk next st, 1 sc into last st. Total 22 st

Row 3 – 13 rep row 2 ( color B )

You will decrease 2 st in each row (1 st on each side)
